How It Started

When aging siblings combine households, the benefits can be profound—from emotional support to financial stability. At Evergreen Homes NW, we design homes for how people really live—whether that means downsizing, raising a family, or, in this case, creating a shared home for four sisters entering their golden years. It all began with a conversation. Sharrion Jones recalls, “I talked with Chris Sundstrom and described I was interested in building a new construction home. He invited us to the Royal Terrace model to see Evergreen’s quality workmanship, design focus, all-electric HVAC system, and more.” That conversation sparked a truly one-of-a-kind project.

Designing for a Vision

This home was unlike any we had designed before. Sharrion, retired and returning to her childhood neighborhood in Vancouver, wanted a home spacious enough for her and her three sisters to live together. She needed a flat lot with space for a large house, ample gardening, and outdoor privacy. We found the perfect site in our new Royal Glen subdivision and began designing a home that reflected the sisters’ shared lifestyle—and their individual needs. Their must-haves included:

  • A large, open-plan kitchen for multiple cooks
  • A spacious great room and dining area
  • Four private suites on the main floor—each with a sitting area, desk, fireplace, and ensuite bath
  • A large office, pantry, mudroom with drop zone, and laundry room
  • A 4-car garage with a sunlit storage room above

Sharrion shared: “Once we decided on a one-level, Boomer-Age-in-Place-Friendly home in Royal Glen, the process with Evergreen Homes’ staff was amazingly efficient and productive.”

Building a Home That Reflects Four Lives

The design came together beautifully. The sisters now have individual suites customized to their tastes and a shared “community space” where they gather and connect. Each sister brought her own personality to the design, especially during the selections process.

Robin recalls:
“The selection process was quite the adventure—fun yet overwhelming. So many choices! I’m thankful for the input from my sisters and the professionals—Becky and Tama at Evergreen Homes, and Tiffany at Macadam Floor and Design.”

She adds:
“I love that we each have our own suite, and a space to come together and interact.”

Elaine says:
“I really love the spaciousness. We don’t have to travel far to enjoy each other’s company or be there if someone needs help. I’ve always wanted a fireplace in my bedroom—I love, love, love the ambience.”

Dolores shares:
“It was great seeing the final look of what we chose. I like that the house is large, and also love the patio, fire pit area, and bubbling fountain.”

Sharrion adds: “I appreciate the wide front hallway, the office space in each suite, the window seats, and the long kitchen counter that seats five. The mudroom works perfectly with access to both the garage and backyard.”

What They Learned Along the Way

As with any custom build, there were insights gained and small things they might do differently next time.

Robin and Sharrion reflect:
“Next time, we’d plan for more walking space in and around the kitchen, particularly between the refrigerator and counter. There’s always foot traffic during meal prep. You don’t realize how important that is until everyone’s in there at once!”

Robin also notes:
“It would’ve been helpful to think through all the little details that make a home more efficient and cozy from the start, to avoid so many change orders. Managing change orders is key, but staying flexible and creative really helps, too, and we did a good job with that.”

Elaine appreciated the chance to personalize her space:
“Being part of the color and tile selection process was exciting. I love working with color. It was overwhelming at times, but I really enjoyed the experience.”

As the financial lead on the project, Sharrion learned a lot: “I had to track multiple complex transactions—what was paid, what was pending. Every step required discussion and quick decisions to keep things moving. It was a huge learning experience.”

A Home—and a Village—Built with Love

We built a special home for four incredible sisters who knew exactly what they wanted. Their decisiveness, collaboration, and joy made this project a pleasure from start to finish. From fireplaces in bedrooms to a community fire pit and a long kitchen counter where laughter flows freely, “Stevens Village” is more than a house—it’s a true forever home.

At Evergreen Homes NW, we’re proud to design for all kinds of families.
